What Are Class, Division, and Groups

Hazardous locations are categorized based on the type of flammable material that may be present, how often it is present, and how dangerous it is.

CLASS

The Class identifies the type of hazardous material in the area.

Class I

Areas where flammable gases or vapors may be present in enough quantity to create an explosive or ignitable atmosphere.

Class II

Areas made hazardous by the presence of combustible dust.

Class III

Areas where easily ignitable fibers or flyings are present due to materials being handled, stored, or processed, but these materials are not likely to be suspended in the air in amounts high enough to ignite.

DIVISIONS

The Division describes how often the hazard is present.

  • Division 1 (Normal Hazard)

Hazardous materials are present during normal operation, or during frequent maintenance or repair.

    Division 2 (Abnormal Hazard)

Hazardous materials are normally contained in closed systems and would only become present in the air due to accidental rupture, equipment failure, or abnormal operation.

GROUPS

The Group identifies the specific type of gas or dust, based on how easily it ignites and its explosion characteristics.

Groups A, B, C, and D (Class I)

Flammable gases and vapors are divided into these groups based on:

  • Ignition temperature
  • Explosion pressure
  • Flammability properties

Groups E, F, and G (Class II)

Combustible dusts are grouped based on:

  • Ignition temperature
  • Electrical conductivity of the dust

UL913 Approved radios from Convergent Radio.

Intrinsically safe radios are critical in hazardous workplaces like oil and gas sites, chemical plants, and grain facilities, where flammable gases or combustible dust can create an explosion risk. UL913-approved radios are a cost-effective way to meet North American safety standards while providing reliable daily communication. Convergent Radio supplies UL913-certified devices that help teams stay compliant, reduce risk, and get the right equipment for demanding industrial environments without overpaying.
